FTC May Look Into New Facebook Privacy
With the complaints that came about as Facebook released its new privacy statements, Facebook may be in a lot of trouble. The complaint from the Electronic Privacy Information Center quotes "These changes violate user expectations, diminish user privacy, and contradict Facebook's own representations." This is mainly because the new changes aim at making more content public, allowing more people to access what you do on the internet. Ergo: Not good. So the Federal Trade Commission may get involved.
One of the visual representations of this new change is when logging into your home page that day and receiving that privacy message, going to the next step will show how you want to change or keep your settings. Categories you haven't had old settings for are automatically defaulted as "Everyone" including the most important: ALL of your status updates, photos, videos, and posts. Basically almost everything that goes onto your wall.
Facebook clearly needs to make a decision on whether or not their competition is Twitter or some other social networking site. In my opinion, Twitter should not be it. Twitter is a microblogging service that combines both connecting with friends using brief sentences and sharing news--using brief sentences. Facebook is about connecting with friends using a wide variety of options, even applications.
