R.I.P. Facebook App Notifications March 1st
Today, the Facebook Developer blog announced that applications will no longer be able to notify you in the standard way that they do now as of March 1st. Or as Facebook says it in a more nerdy way, "discontinuing support for notifications.send", which would be the API for app notifications. Recently, a lot of spamming has taken place through notifications saying a person has been tagged into a photo, only to lead to some bizarre application when the notification is clicked.
There are now three new, more subtle ways for applications to communicate for users. They can send emails if you are opted in to that application to do so, and now with the new Facebook redesign, there are two ways to integrate app notifications into Facebook. Developers now have options to on the Applications and Games dashboard (on the sidebar) to send smaller notifications, or add a counter next to the application title in the sidebar if it is bookmarked by the user.
So, those will be the new implementations for app notifications, but hopefully now we can say goodbye to all the spam notifications!
