Top 10 Wanted iPhone OS 4.0 Features
Apple is due to be announcing this month the new features of iPhone OS 4.0 which will naturally come out in June along with the new iPhone, what ever that may be. Last year, the iPhone SDK event for 3.0 was on March 14th, but so far no word from Apple has been confirmed as to a specific date to hold the SDK conference and announce iPhone 4.0.
So what would we like in iPhone OS 4.0. Clearly, there's a lot of missing features that other phones have. Apple is going to have to take it up a notch this year. So we've compiled a list of the top ten wanted iPhone OS 4.0 features. Here we go:
10. Improved Mail App
Wouldn't it be great to have more than one email address to sync into one inbox? We thought so too. This needs to happen. A face lift for the app would be nice too.
9. Improved App Store App
With 140,000 apps in the app store and growing, the current design of the app store simply is not cutting it anymore. It needs to be able to showcase more apps.
8. More Customization
Apple is one of the only phones where you can't have a custom wallpaper. Yeah sure, a wallpaper on the lock screen is nice for two seconds, but if you actually want to USE your iPhone, you won't be able to see nice pictures behind the icon. Also, we should be able to remove built-in apps that are shipped with the iPhone, or at least hide them.
7. "Photos" Should be Renamed
I know this isn't a big deal to everyone, but ever since iPhone 3G S, I think the icon shouldn't be called Photos anymore because it holds videos now too on the latest device. It should be called "Media" or "Library". Something like that. Videos simply aren't photos.
6. Spotlight Search Should Search the Web
I rarely use spotlight search, except for finding an app. I never use it to do anything else. I would really like it if we could flick to the left, and also get results from searching the web right on our iPhone, combined with the content of our iPhone.
5. Photo Editing & Uploading
If we have video editing (or at least trim, anyway), we should at least have some basic photo editing features after taking a picture from the camera. Things such as cropping and rotating would occasionally be nice. Also, a built in ability to upload to photo sharing sites like Facebook and Flickr and such. Video uploading would be a plus, too.
4. Adobe Flash Support
This is probably a dream that will never come true. After Steve Jobs blatantly insulted Adobe as being a lazy company and hoped for the world to move toward HTML5, Flash seems to be a no-go for any Apple device besides the Mac. Hopefully, the world will move toward HTML5 because as of now, there are millions of sites that simply cannot be viewed on the iPhone for lack of flash support.
3. Better App Organization
I have six pages of apps on my phone. I would really appreciate it if we had folders to organize those apps into, even if they were just categories from the app store. It's much easier than searching or finding a single app. Even if Apple did a "stacks" sort of thing from Mac OS X to open folders of apps.
2. Complete User Interface Redesign
Let's face it, the UI of the iPhone kind of sucks now. It's just a bunch of icons and if you flip the page -- more icons. We iPhone users need a little spice in our life, and right now we aren't getting it efficiently. Android is such an elegant-looking operating system, and it's time iPhone OS followed suit.
1. Multitasking
This has been one of the most requested features since iPhone first launched back in 2007, and to be a bit harsh, this is Apple's final chance. All the other top competitors of the iPhone have multitasking, and if we don't get it this year it's going to be a real disappointment. I understand it hogs battery life so even if you put it on the next-gen iPhone and not on previous iPhones. It needs to show up SOMEWHERE on the iPhone. Push notifications was a start, but we need to finish now.
