Bing, Google, and the War Over Background Images

Bing, Google, and the War Over Background Images

You may have heard by now that recently Google gave users the option to place a custom background image on google.com. Many people thought that this was a direct attack at Bing. Bing currently has a gorgeous background image that rotates each day to a new one. However, up until last night, Google's had a white background set to default. Now, Google seems to also be rotating through background images. TechCrunch reports that this will be only until the end of the day to raise awareness for the new feature. Google, you've gotten you're awareness, but I'd imagine it's not in the way you had hoped.

Bing (er, Microsoft) had something to say about this on Microsoft's Europe Twitter account.

It's good to see they have a sense of humor about all this. It's true, imitation is the best form of flattery, but is Google going for flattery? It's doubtful. Google just really like to compete with... everyone. Yes, everyone. Apple, of course, seems to be their main target. On top of Apple, they stretch out to Bing by adding more detailed filters to search last year when Bing came out, and now this. Their original "Don't be evil" slogan is starting to look more and more contradictory.

What do you think? Is Google right to add background images, or is it a direct copy of Bing? Leave a comment and share your opinion!
