Formspring.me Gets Completely Redesigned

Formspring.me is a website that allows friends to ask questions to other friends and they answer them. The fun comes about when people set themselves to "Ask anonymously" and then it seems like people have more sense of freedom in the situation. Plus you can follow your friends' answers to be streamed to your home page, find other people, and they can follow you. The site was originally built more for gathering information and polling others, but that has clearly been turned around. It's gotten a complete redesign this morning with a refresh new interface, new privacy settings for your profile, and more. I'll be happy to walk you through it.

The first thing you'll notice is the new home page, which now asks you to answer some questions of their own. Mine was "What's the best place to eat ice cream near you?" Then when you answer, it's posted to your profile. I must say, the new home page doesn't really explain well what Formspring.me actually does. The Login button has been moved to the top right, almost unnoticeable actually.

Once you log in, you'll be greeted by the newly designed interface. Your photo and a "Welcome back" message is in the left sidebar. I certainly hope they plan to do more with that sidebar because right now it's pretty much blank. Then to the right are all of your friends' questions with a slightly different look to them. There's also a more prominent link to follow those answers via RSS.

The navigation above has changed too. "Inbox" has been renamed to "Questions" but still has the same purpose, to answer your incoming questions. You can also generate your own. Plus, on the right there's easy access to invite friends, or share your questions on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, or Blogger (Blogger's new).

Profiles make more use of that gray sidebar on the left, displaying your bio, questions answered, and the Unfollow button. The answers on your profile remain basically the same, with the exception of one change in the thumbnail photo. If someone chose not to be anonymous in a question, a small thumbnail of their photo appears on the bottom right of your main thumbnail.

Finally, People lists all the folks you're following and the ability to find new people to follow by name, Facebook, or Twitter. And of course you can always unfollow your current ones. There still seems to be a lack of management for people who follow you, though.

The new Settings page has a brand new "Privacy" option that allows you to choose whether or not you want anonymous questions, or if you want anonymous questions to be from someone logged in.

Overall, the new redesign looks fresh and bubbly. I really like the new Privacy options which, to my knowledge, were not there at all previously. If you have a Formspring, check it out. If you don't and you feel like you want to be exploited by your friends, go for it.
