99 Cent iTunes TV Show Rentals on the Horizon?

Bloomberg is reporting that Apple is in talks with News Corp., CBS Corp., and Disney about joining to provide television show rentals to iTunes users. These rentals would supposedly cost $0.99 per television episode and would be available to watch for 48 hours.

The episodes will be available to Apple’s rental service within 24 hours of their air dates and will be commercial-free, one of the people said. Apple plans to hold a San Francisco event Sept. 7, two weeks ahead of the start of the new prime- time TV season, to unveil the service and a refreshed line of entertainment products, two people said. -- Bloomberg

Bloomberg is also in full support of recent rumors that Apple would unveil a new $99 version of Apple TV along with a new iPod Touch featuring the iPhone 4's retina display, which was a given since its announcement back in June.

Also expected at an Apple event would likely be a refresh of the iPod nano, iPod classic, and full details of iOS 3.1 including Game Center which was originally announced in April.

Apple's current movie rental service sells movies starting at $2.99 each for a 30-day rental, however once the movie has started playing, it would expire in 24 hours. There was mixed reactions about this format, but according to the information above that doesn't seem to be the format Apple will be taking if and when they launch TV show rentals.
