New iPod Touch Faster than iPhone 4?
A speed test was recently posted on YouTube by TechTechManTV between the new 4th generation iPod Touch and the iPhone 4. A few days ago, iFixit discovered that while the iPhone 4 had 512MB of internal memory, the newest iPod Touch had half -- only 256MB of memory. It appears that in this video, however, the iPod Touch has proven itself to be slightly faster than the iPhone 4.
Both the latest iPod Touch and the iPhone 4 have Apple's A4 processing chip built inside, but Apple has not revealed the clock speed of the chip in either of these devices. The only time it was ever revealed was for its first unveiling in the Apple iPad. The chip was said to be clocked at 1GHz in the iPad. Most people now believe that the 1GHz A4 chip may have been underclocked in the iPhone 4 to somewhere around 800MHz.
I personally believe this is true, and watching the video myself, it's possible that the 4th generation iPod Touch has a slightly faster clock speed than the iPhone 4. The two main reasons why Apple would ever underclock the A4 would probably be to avoid overheating issues and to save as much battery life as possible. Without 3G capabilities in the iPod Touch, battery life becomes a bit less of an issue, increasing Apple's ability to make the chip slightly faster to increase the performance even with less memory.
