Apple Updates MacBook Pros, Adds Speed and New Features
Apple, as widely expected, has updated its line of MacBook Pros today to include quite a bundle of new features. To start, the 15-inch and 17-inch models now feature quad-core Intel Core i7 "Sandy Bridge" processors. The 13-inch models feature either Intel Core i5 or i7 processors. Overall, the MacBook Pros are now up to twice as fast as previous-generation models. In addition, the 15-inch and 17-inch models now feature AMD Radeon graphics processors which make graphics 3x faster than previously.
In keeping with the theme of speed, Apple has also introduced new Thunderbolt technology built into every MacBook Pro, which is a fast, new I/O. According to Apple:
The Thunderbolt port will give you plug-and-play performance with a whole new world of Thunderbolt peripherals, as well as with the Apple LED Cinema Display and other Mini DisplayPort peripherals. You can daisy-chain as many as six devices, including your display. And with support for video and eight-channel audio, it’s easy to connect HDMI-compatible devices — like your TV and home stereo — using the HDMI adapter you already have. Current VGA, DVI, and DisplayPort adapters are also supported.
Finally, Apple is renaming the built in iSight webcam to "FaceTime HD" that will allow you to participate in HD video calls with anyone that has a FaceTime HD camera. It ships free with every new MacBook Pro and is available for $0.99 in the Mac App Store for other Mac models.
