What to Expect at Apple's iPad 2 Event This Wednesday

As always, it's time for Bitts to proclaim the "what's expected" list. If you are new to Bitts, here's a quick rundown. A few days before any Apple event, a post is typed up with a bunch of rumors about that event. The credibility of those rumors are then ranked on a scale of one star to five stars. My track record is actually pretty good so far. Let's dive in to all the iPad 2 rumors.

Thinner, Lighter, and Faster - ★★★★★
This is almost a given. Practically every single report so far points to the new iPad 2 being thinner, lighter, and faster. A beveled side design, a faster processor, and more RAM all contribute to this one rumor.

Front and Back Cameras, FaceTime - ★★★★★
This is another one that's almost a given. Though most are more sure about the front camera than the back, it just makes sense for Apple to add a camera on the back of the iPad 2. Plus, iPad is the only remaining iOS device that currently does not have FaceTime. It's coming.

Improved Larger Speaker - ★★★★
Everybody seems to be damn sure about this, yet I remain skeptical, hence the fifth star being removed. I feel like a larger speaker on the back of the iPad would feel out of place and would sacrifice the beauty of the design a little bit. Still, it's a strong rumor.

USB/Thunderbolt/SD Card Slot - ★★★
You probably know that the current iPad lacks any type of I/O other than Apple's own 30-pin dock connector and headphone jack. USB and SD card slots would really be nice additions, though skepticism remains for just about everyone. With the addition of the speedy new Thunderbolt I/O in new MacBook Pros, speculation has risen about this possibly coming to the iPad.

iOS 5.0 Preview - ★★★
Some say yes while others say no. It makes sense to give a sneak preview of iOS 5 in the same event, but Apple has its own event toward the end of March to give developers a chance to learn about any new features or APIs in new versions of iOS.

Retina Display - ★★
I really wish I could say a retina display was definitely coming because it's so beautiful on the iPhone 4 and iPod touch, but it most likely will not make it into this model of the iPad. That many pixels on a 9.7" display would not only cost more money to make, but would demand more graphics power and RAM. A generally improved display is still possible, however.

Price Drop -
Nah. I'm thinking Apple is most likely going to keep the iPad 2 starting at $499. The good news is the price will almost definitely not go up. Plus, Apple may boost the storage space from 16GB to 32GB for the $499.
