RIM Issues BlackBerry PlayBook Recall

RIM Issues BlackBerry PlayBook Recall

RIM has reportedly issued a recall on nearly 1,000 faulty BlackBerry PlayBook units tonight. Luckily, if you happen to be one of the few that actually owns a BlackBerry PlayBook, the recall only applies to customers who purchased their tablet at Staples. All of the faulty units have been shipped to Staples, but not all of them may have been purchased just yet. Engadget has the full list of 935 serial numbers that are being recalled and you can view that list right here.

So far, the BlackBerry PlayBook has received mostly negative reviews. Functionality seems to be pretty limited with the complete lack of mail, contacts, and calendar apps and the smaller screen isn't ideal for viewing complex web pages among other things. RIM is having trouble building up a credible app store -- or App World -- but plans on bringing Android apps to the platform this summer.

Update (5/16): Over the weekend I received a tip from a PR agency after writing this article that clarified RIM's stance on the matter:

RIM determined that approximately one thousand BlackBerry PlayBook tablets (16 GB) were shipped with an OS build that may result in the devices being unable to properly load software upon initial set-up.

The majority of the affected devices are still in the distribution channel and haven’t reached customers. RIM is working to replace the affected devices.

In the small number of cases where a customer received a PlayBook that is unable to properly load software upon initial set-up, they can contact RIM for assistance.
