20,000 Apps Now on Android
The Android mobile operating system now has 20,000 applications for smartphone users to access on their Android Market (a.k.a app store). The Android Market is growing at a pretty fast rate. Is it possible it could ever catch up to Apple's App Store?
Yes and no. Yes because there's only so many apps you can put on a phone before ideas simply run out or are duplicated in developers' own apps. Plus, all the apps currently on the app store are being developed by the same developers to put on the Android Market.
Same app + two different mobile operating systems = money = developer's happiness.
No, it's not exactly possible because app store has a huge lead. App store has over 100,000 apps, over 5x more than Android. Plus, app growth skyrockets again at the launch of new versions of the iPhone every June.
Still, it's a great accomplishment for Google Android.
