AOL Starts Fresh and Against Yahoo!
Remember not too long ago... I would say maybe from about 2000 - 2005, almost everyone accessing the Internet was accessing it from AOL 8.0 or 9.0 suite. Come on, I know you remember. You'd click onto the program, sign on and hear that annoying dialing tone from your computer and then you'd finally get on with all those icons at the top for Mail, YellowPages, AIM, and other services. Then, you'd come up with a separate window for surfing the web.
Ah yes, we try to forget that time. The time that AOL ruled
the web. Once that faded away and people realized how slow AOL was, TimeWarner bought AOL. AOL transformed from an internet provider to a content provider offering free services such as AOL Instant Messenger. They still have what is now AOL 9.5 for free, but it is simply a browser with AOL extras based on Internet Explorer's core. You need WiFi separate.
Now today, AOL has separated from TimeWarner and become it's own company once more. Starting today they rebranded themselves still as a content provider, but with a fresh look. They too are focused on apps and social networking. On the new aol.com, you see a lowercase "Aol" logo and a new News Feeds tab to see all your content in one place. Similar to Yahoo!'s new approach. While both once gigantic empires of the web have fallen flat in the last decade, Yahoo somehow kept above the surface while AOL is now trying to swim back up again. Take a look at the screenshot below of the new home page. Do you think AOL is on their way back up as a content provider?
