Is Apple iPad the new Windows Vista?
Microsoft Windows Vista often had the question "Why should I buy it?" asked by Windows XP users. Not only was there such a question, but there was such an answer: "You shouldn't. It sucks." While the Apple iPad may not suck -- yet -- it isn't really getting great responses so far. There's a few gadget lovers out there that simply buy a gadget for the sole reason that it's made my Apple, there's another few that really like the idea, and then there's the rest that can't seem to figure out why they should spend at least $500 on the Apple iPad.
The Apple iPad was released by Apple today at their "Come see our latest creation" event/keynote. It's basically a large iPod Touch with the ability to read books and, er, be large. Apple seems to have been aiming for a whole new category in the industry between smartphone and laptop. While it's not exactly a tablet because it's not a full blown computer, it's more of a large media pad - hence the name, iPad.
The name "iPad" has also gotten tremendous laughs around the internet. A current trending topic on Twitter would be "iTampon", saying that the name "iPad" references a woman's aid for her time of the month. So after mediocre responses and, shall we say, vaginal references, the question appears again. Why should I buy it?
The answer is you shouldn't yet. As Windows Vista made slight improvements overtime with drivers and service packs, it is expected that the iPad will improve as well. Apple is known to refresh their products once a year or so, so pray the iPad gets its own next January. After more features are added, maybe the iPad will become more convincing as a serious new product category... and less of a joke.
