What Google Buzz Needs to Succeed
Google Buzz has certainly shown it's name quite a bit this week ever since its unveiling just three days ago. It seems to be taking off quite well among Gmail users, but is that just because of the hype, or is it really a success? Do we remember back in June when Microsoft launched its new search engine Bing? On the third day, it peaked way beyond Yahoo! and people really thought that the advertisements were really paying off--Bing was the new thing. But within a few days, it slipped right back under. It has grown though, but it's certainly not the new Google. It is about equal with Yahoo right now.
But what about Buzz? Google is taking its own approach on a social network, or a sharing service if you will. Will it be successful? My answer: as of now, I personally don't think so, but it can be. First of all, there's a big issue with limiting it to just Gmail users. Gmail is the third most popular email service which is great, but it's also not so great. Not everyone uses Gmail, which means not everyone's going to use Buzz. If people go onto Buzz and see that they only have two contacts that actually use Gmail and Buzz, people are just going to stick to Facebook and Twitter. There's no reason to add another service to confuse people. And let's face it, "buzzing" to complete strangers is simply not a trend.
Second, we all know that Facebook is a hit with 400 million users. Those 400 million aren't going to want to sacrifice their precious friends on that service, and they certainly aren't going to want to use both Facebook and Buzz posting the same status twice every single time they have something to say. So Google Buzz needs to integrate more with Facebook, like sending buzzes to Facebook or Twitter. People like one central hub to broadcast their messages among multiple services, since we really don't have that--except HootSuite, which is good, but limited--people usually just stick to using one service.
Finally, Google Buzz needs to organize itself dramatically. I've tried using Buzz, and I think it's a great concept but as of now I'm simply not using it. When you follow people on Buzz, you get to comment on their posts, which is great, but there's no way to minimize those posts. So if you have a buzz with 100 comments on it, you are stuck with those comments right in your face and you have to scroll to the VERY BOTTOM to add your own comment or see another buzz. That's a no no. Plus, if Google plans adding more and more features, it's going to be hard to squeeze all that into something that's just an "app" for Gmail. So in my opinion, Google needs to figure out a new layout for the Google Buzz page and clean it up a bit while still making it feature-packed.
Do we have our to-do list, Google? Get to work!
