Microsoft Announces Windows 7 Service Pack 1
Today, Microsoft announced the very first details of Windows 7 SP1. Sorry, folks, there is no beta version yet available for download and/or testing. There are just some vague details Microsoft provided for us on the Windows Blog and also at their Desktop Virtualization Hour event.
Windows 7 SP1 will only have minor updates, says Microsoft. We can assume that minor updates probably means mostly bug fixes and maybe some small enhancements and tweaks here and there. No new features will be coming to Windows 7 in this service pack. However, it will include an updated Remote Desktop client. However, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 will have two new desktop virtualization features - Microsoft RemoteFX and Dynamic Memory. I'm not going to get into detail about that because the general public doesn't deal with servers and if they do, they probably don't deal with server service packs.
Moving on, Microsoft also oddly took the time to discourage us from waiting until Service Pack 1 to get Windows 7. They wanted to assure us that Windows 7 is perfectly fine as it is now. As a user of the Windows 7 RTM since the beginning of October, I can confirm that Windows 7 shines. Service packs always give a piece of mind, though.
No in-depth details were released today. More details will be released once they get close to a milestone, and the final release will be available at the Microsoft Download Center and through Windows Update.
