Today, Apple finally announced details of iPhone OS 4.0 which will be arriving this summer as an update for iPhone and iPod Touch, though older models such as the 3G, original iPhone, and 1st-gen iPod Touch will not receive all of the features.

First on the list: Multitasking is finally here!

Users can now switch between apps without actually exiting the app. For instance, a radio app can still play music in the background while your on some other app. Stuff like that is finally here. There's seven different types of APIs to provide multitasking. Just double tapping the Home button will bring up a small menu of icons of programs that are already running! Quite nifty.







Organize Apps by Folders
Drag and drop one icon onto the other to create a folder! It will automatically name that folder according to the category of the app, but you can always rename it. Finally, a great organization feature. On top of that, your iPhone and iPod Touch can now store up to 2000 apps. Previously, it was only 180. The folder will also have a custom icon of smaller icons. Great feature!




All Your Mail in One Inbox
If you have multiple mail accounts, organization is no longer an issue. Apple introduced the unified inbox so all your accounts' mail will go into one inbox with all of it nice and tidied up instead of switching between accounts.






iBooks Now on iPhone
From the iPad, Apple has added an iBooks app (and iBookstore) to the iPhone/iPod Touch to read eBooks. The same features as the iPad, but on a smaller screen. You can also sync books between your iPhone and iPad if you have both and of course through iTunes. Straight to the point.






Game Center
Because of the over 50,000 gaming apps in the app store, Apple has created a Game Center social networking app to earn points and achievements, invite friends, etc. It's basically like an XBox Live type of thing going on here.

The iPhone/iPod Touch version of 4.0 will be out in the summer with 4.0 coming to iPad in the fall.
