Microsoft Unveils Kin Phones Pricing & Availability
Less than a month after announcing Microsoft's Kin smartphones (if it's even a smartphone), Microsoft today announced the pricing and availability for both the Kin One and Kin Two. We already knew Microsoft had an exclusive contract with Verizon Wireless, but did not know prices for the phone, data plans, and dates for availability. Today those have all been revealed.
Starting tomorrow, May 6th, the Kin phones will be available online. Kin One will be $49.99 after a $100 mail-in-rebate, and its larger counterpart the Kin Two will be available for $99.99 after the same rebate, which by the way will come in the form of a debit card. On May 13th, Kin phones will be available in Verizon stores everywhere. Seems like a really good deal for the phones right? That's where Verizon steps in to make it horribly wrong. Microsoft's press release quotes:
To get the most from KIN, Verizon Wireless customers will need to subscribe to a Verizon Wireless Nationwide Talk plan and an Email and Web for Smartphone plan. Nationwide Talk plans begin at $39.99 monthly access. Email and Web for Smartphone plans start at $29.99 for unlimited monthly access. So, that's a minimum of $70 per month, plus if you want unlimited texting? Better add $20. $90 a month to own this social networking, semi-smartphone? Not really so great anymore. Of course, there's only one clear target for this phone, and that's for die-hard social networking fans. Will the data prices overwhelm Microsoft's targeted demographic?
