Mozilla Firefox to Finally Start 64-Bit Transition

A programmer for Firefox recently announced 64-bit builds of Firefox for Windows. Unfortunately it's a very early build, there's no installer, and it's on an FTP site. But the good news is that this gives signs that Firefox will soon continue to make this transition. 64-bit would allow for faster performance on Firefox overall and probably better use of memory.

Internet Explorer and Apple's Safari both have 64-bit versions available, while Google's has also been in the works. This makes Firefox the last of the four major browsers in the USA to jump on the 64-bit bandwagon. There are currently unofficial versions of Firefox out there that take advantage of 64-bit processing, but the key word there is unofficial.

A 64-bit Firefox is currently planned to be released with Firefox 4.0, due by the end of November 2010.
