Official Twitter App for iPhone Now Available!
It's official, the Twitter for iPhone app is now available in the app store. It surfaced in other countries last night and became available midday today. It started out when Twitter acquired Tweetie, the popular iPhone app, a few weeks ago in an effort to finally create an official Twitter app for the iPhone and iPod Touch (and iPad, but not as a native iPad app). It's branded as version 3.0 because it was previously Tweetie 2. It's not that great of an upgrade besides the name change but there are some new features.
First of all, even without having an account on Twitter, you can still browse some of the features. You can search for names or topics, see nearby tweets, see suggested users, the new "Top Tweets" features, and the current trending topics on Twitter. PS: If you are updating the app from Tweetie 2, you'll have to add in your accounts all over again.
Other features include a tweaked look to the way retweets appear, plus using the "swipe" gesture on a tweet to bring up the action bar, a Retweet icon is there now also instead of having to go into the "More" menu. Plus an Account & Settings button on the More menu and the ability to really search all People instead of going to a specific user.
And of course there's a fresh new app icon and Twitter logo with the price tag of $2.99 gone, in favor of its new completely free pricing. Tweetie was an excellent iPhone app and surpassed all the others in my opinion, and now that Twitter thinks so too after the acquisition and made it free and official, there's nothing better. It's now available on the iPhone app store.
