Android 3.0 to Arrive This Fall?
In my opinion, this is a very low-key rumor, nonetheless it should be discussed. A Russian mobile journalist has predicted that Android 3.0 codename "Gingerbread" will land sometime in mid-October. There's no proof on any of this just yet, but if what he says is true, the OS will be very powerful. Plus, it's likely that 3.0 would be for the ultimate smartphones but Google would continue selling 2.2 on smaller models.
So, what does he expect in 3.0? He expects that most phones running 3.0 will have at least a 4" display, a minimum 1GHz processor, and a minimum 512MB of memory. The new OS will also support an astounding 1280x760 resolution on displays 4" and up. Plus, the UI will change drastically.
The problem I have with rumors like this is, Android 2.2 "Froyo" was announced not too long ago and it's just starting to be rolled out. With companies like Motorola saying the Droid X will get an Android 2.2 update after it ships (say August or September), it doesn't seem like there's room for 3.0 in October. Android 2.2 just recently got the OK signal by Google to be pushed out on all Nexus Ones via an OTA update.
So, are all these new specs impressive? Or are they just a little too good to be true?
