Apple Releases Safari 5
Incredible. On the day of the new iPhone 4, Apple took it upon themselves to release Safari 5.0, the all new version of their web browser. It's not yet available on the Apple website for download, but there is a press release. It boasts a 30% performance increase over Safari 4 and apparently 3% faster than Google Chrome 5. Plus a new feature called Safari Reader which makes it easy to read articles on the web by putting them in a single, scrollable view additional HTML5 support, and support to search with Microsoft's Bing search engine. But there's one feature that has to top them all:
The new, free Safari Developer Program allows developers to customize and enhance Safari 5 with extensions based on standard web technologies like HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. The Extension Builder, new in Safari 5, simplifies the development, installation and packaging of extensions. For enhanced security and stability, Safari Extensions are sandboxed, signed with a digital certificate from Apple and run solely in the browser. While the press release says it is available at apple.com/safari, Safari 4 still remains on the download page. This article will be updated when its released, or with more details that may emerge.
UPDATE (7:33p): The download still isn't up and there's more and more speculation that this was a premature press release, especially since the press release has been pulled and no longer available. No word from Apple yet on the situation at hand.
UPDATE (7:42p): Nope! Safari 5 is live on apple.com. It still says Safari 4 on the main page, but upon download you'll notice the version number is 5.0. Go get some new Safari!
