Let the iPhone 4 Pre-Orders Begin! Or Not...?
Today's the day, everyone! Love the iPhone 4 in all of its glory? Go ahead, pre-order one. They are now available for pre-order along with the newly priced iPhone 3GS. For $99 you'll be able to pre-order the iPhone 3GS running iOS4 and have it shipped to your house on June 24th. Or, for $199 you can pre-order the all new iPhone 4 in black only. The white version will not be available for pre-order online or in store just yet. The iPhone 4 will also arrive on June 24th. But wait a minute, AT&T is making it a little bit more messy than that.
This morning, there are numerous reports that AT&T's pre-ordering servers have crashed. Yes, crashed. No word from AT&T yet but we do know there's definitely an issue. Plus, they have now taken down the entire pre-ordering system and may be suffering from even more security breaches like the ones on the iPad 3G. On top of that, now Apple's Online Store has collapsed too because the upgrade depends on AT&T's servers.
Gizmodo's own Kyle VanHermert had an issue with his own pre-order and reported the errors:
They're just using some web interface, not the exact same customers are using online, but not much better. It's probably the same servers. Basically, they were getting one pre-order thru every 20 minutes. They said the problem was system wide. Here's how it worked: They just kept mashing on the 'submit' button and getting error after error. On the umpteenth try, it'd go through and then the next step, whatever that was, would get error after error. After a long time, it would finally go through. What's worse is that the first step of the process reups your 2 year contract, so you can't walk away if you get fed up. I had to stick around until it went through, or i'd have a new contract but no subsidized phone.People apparently are reporting success through Best Buy, so if you have a local Best Buy, by all means take advantage of it. Thanks once again, AT&T.
