Nintendo 3DS Revealed: 3D Media Without Glasses
Today at Nintendo's own E3 conference, Nintendo took the stage and announced the new Nintendo 3DS. It's been previously rumored to be their all new flagship gaming device based entirely on 3D content without having to wear glasses. Those rumors have been proven true today.
Let me just say right now that this is one of the ugliest little gadgets I've ever had the misfortune to lay my eyes on. First of all, what's with the top being black and the bottom being blue? And the fact that everything seems so jagged and deformed. But onto the real news.
The top features a 3.5" widescreen display while the bottom features the same touch screen display. Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo, says having a top touch screen would interfere with the 3D technology. The 3DS has the ability to take photos and view them in 3D on the screen with its front-facing or rear-facing camera and also watch Hollywood movies in 3D. Disney, DreamWorks, and Warner Bros. are working on 3D content specifically for the 3DS soon.
And of course you can play games in 3D. Older games will still be compatible with the 3DS. All you have to do is use the switch on the right to toggle the 3D functionality on or off. As for the newer games specifically made in 3D, I'm sure they will look surreal. Plus, it includes a gyroscope, motion sensor, and WiFi which can quickly log you in in the background without even knowing it and automatically connect to the web.
Pricing and availability were not yet announced, so you can probably expect the device to be available in very late 2010 or Q1 2011.
