T-Mobile Kills the Sidekick

T-Mobile Kills the Sidekick

Just a day after Microsoft announces that they pulled the plug on Kin, another device is being killed off, and that device is the Sidekick. Both the Sidekick LX and the Sidekick 2008 will no longer be available on T-Mobile starting tomorrow, June 2nd, as T-Mobile works on the next generation. Whether that is another Sidekick or an evolution of the device is unclear right now.

T-Mobile had an official statement:

As T-Mobile looks to further innovate and raise the bar for the next iteration of the T-Mobile Sidekick, as of July 2, the Sidekick LX and Sidekick 2008 will no longer be available through T-Mobile, including retail stores, care, telesales and online. While we work on the next chapter of our storied Sidekick franchise, T-Mobile will continue to provide our loyal Sidekick customers with product service and support. Stay tuned for exciting updates in the months ahead, which we expect will provide customers with a new and fresh experience.
Unless T-Mobile can really evolve the Sidekick into a modern smartphone, it doesn't look like Sidekick will ever get the limelight again. The device had its day a few years back, I would say up until the iPhone, and then the Sidekick was kicked to the curb and hasn't made a true comeback since then. We'll have to wait and see what T-Mobile has in store for us "in the months ahead".
