Apple Magic Wand Remote Fuels Fire for New iTV

Apple Magic Wand Remote Fuels Fire for New iTV

A new patent has surfaced, just in time for rumors of iTV, an entirely new version of the current Apple TV. This new iTV would support its own app store for television applications, smaller hard drive, and smaller price tag at just $99. The patent image above clearly depicts applications at the bottom for what looks like an App Store icon, QuickTime, and Safari -- just a few examples.

This Magic Wand remote would work very similarly to the current Wii Remote. Instead of pressing buttons to navigate, the user would point the remote at the television and move it around to move a cursor around on the screen and then click an item. Rotating the remote would probably serve its own purposes as well, such as rotating a photo (seen above). Something that is certainly worth pointing out is Apple's use of the name "Apple TV" in the patent rather than iTV, of course that could just be to hide the possible name change.

If the name were to be changed to iTV, Apple would certainly have some trademark problems in United Kingdom, where the name is currently owned.

Apple is expected to unveil the iTV this Wednesday, September 1st, at their "special event". Also expected are a new iPod Touch with FaceTime and retina display, iOS 4.1 with Game Center, and maybe even iOS 4 for iPad.
