It's About Damn Time: Facebook Fixes Chat!

Finally Facebook had something to say today about their incredibly annoying Facebook Chat feature. If you use Facebook, you'll know that sometimes errors occur or the chat will go completely blank. Facebook announced that they are taking steps to fix this and make improvements -- at the cost of one browser.

Many of you have told us that sometimes your Chat session comes and goes or even stops completely. We're working hard to end those interruptions so that your experience is stable and consistent. The good news: We've already made progress, and we're taking some more big steps in the coming weeks. For example, in the past couple of weeks, we've already made Chat faster and more stable, fixed bugs and improved the technology on which it runs.

So users should definitely be noticing some speed and stability improvements soon. Oh, and remember the whole "IE6 Must Die" campaign that floated around the internet a few months ago? Facebook thinks so too.

The biggest improvements come from changes that aren't supported on older web browsers. After evaluating the alternatives, we've decided to make rapid improvements and provide the best Chat experience possible, which means we will no longer support Internet Explorer 6 browsers.

Facebook said it will launch this on September 15th -- which coincidentally is the same day Microsoft launches IE9 beta -- to give users time to upgrade their browser if they are still using that dinosaur.

It's incredibly refreshing to see Facebook finally doing something about their awful chat experience. I personally look forward to the improvements and maybe even some new features coming in the future.
