New Apple TV to Get Name Change, iOS App Support?

With Apple's annual iPod event just a month away or some say even closer, it may come as a surprise that very few iPod rumors have been released. Instead, this year seems to be a lot about the Apple TV, Apple's "hobby" device. Today, Engadget released news from its sources saying that Apple will be drastically changing the Apple TV. First, by giving it the new name of iTV. You may recall back in October 2006 when Apple first announced Apple TV, it was originally called iTV until later changed at Macworld 2007.

Next, and the biggest part of this rumor, is that iTV will run iOS with full app compatibility. This has brought about the question of "How am I going to use these apps with my remote?" My own personal thought on this is that Apple will open up a whole new format of apps for developers to create specifically for the iTV, similar to what they did for the iPad's bigger screen, except this would have to be controlled with a remote -- or whatever possible device Apple may conger up to replace the useless contraption.

iTV will supposedly have a 16GB hard drive and the Apple's A4 chip built in with no 1080p support -- 720p only. 16GB is also a huge step down from the current 160GB offering, so it's likely that movies, music, and other content will be stored on a computer or other device.

If the rumors are true, this revision of Apple TV may be expected as early as next month. Providing an upgrade for those of us currently in possession of a $230 Apple TV would probably be a win too, Apple.
