Barnes & Noble Unveils Android-Based NOOKcolor

Barnes & Noble clearly wants to stand out in the crowd and go past competing with just Amazon's Kindle. Today they unveiled the brand new NOOKcolor. It has a 7-inch full-color backlit touchscreen display, 8GB of built-in storage which is expandable up to 32GB, 802.11n WiFi, standard stereo headphone jack, and microUSB and microSD slots.

Since the NOOKcolor runs Android 2.1 (why it's not Froyo I'm not sure), Barnes & Noble will be launching a developer program for developers to submit apps and games for purchase on the NOOKcolor. This will be their alternative to providing access to the Android Market. You'll also have access to a full web browser.

With WiFi turned off, the NOOKcolor can run on its own for about eight hours. This is mediocre at best. The iPad has a 9.7-inch display and can run up to ten hours on a full charge.

The NOOKcolor is available now for $249 with shipments expected to begin on November 19th.
