Facebook Revamps Groups, Adds Group Chat

All those other announcements today at Facebook's event were nice (dashboard for connected apps, download all your info, etc), but it doesn't nearly measure up to the total revamp of Facebook Groups. The new Groups feature is designed to replace friend lists, which Facebook says only 5% of its entire user base even used. Friend lists will still be available to use, but Groups is meant for the ultimate in sharing between just certain people.

You'll be able to create a group, manage them from your sidebar (which is also getting minor refinements), post content -- even documents, set the privacy settings of the group, and even start a group chat. Besides group chat, another notable communication feature is the ability to set up a central email address for that group.

I personally think that group chat is one of the best features Facebook took the time to announce today. Ever since Facebook launched Chat back in 2008, group chat was probably the most wanted feature. Though it's not here for general use around the site, using it in Groups is a leap forward I'm sure many will welcome.
