Mac OS X Meets iOS With 10.7 Lion; Multi-Touch, Mac App Store, and More
Apple's biggest announcement today was probably not the new MacBook Air (info in upcoming article), but a sneak peek at Apple's next major desktop operating system, Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. The theme "Back to the Mac" was inspired by the creation of tons of new features in iOS, which was built off of OS X. Steve Jobs on stage said it's time to bring those features back to the Mac.
Mac OS X Lion adds full multi-touch gesture support for multiple purposes using either the the Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad. The biggest feature though is going to be the Mac App Store, which will be Mac's own separate marketplace for apps. The launchpad feature will be your central hub for launching and managing apps -- including the ability to sort them into folders almost exactly like on the iPad or iPhone. Mission Control will be somewhat like an "enhanced Expose" feature to view your dock, all your open windows, and all your open applications in one organized view.
The Mac App Store will launch within 90 days and will be available on Mac OS X Snow Leopard. It will also launch on OS X Lion. The planned release for the new OS is summer of 2011.
