After quite a bit of waiting, Twitter has decided to take the next step for their iPhone app and update it to support push notifications. Twitter Mobile tweeted tonight:

As stated, push notifications is only for mentions and direct messages, which is probably all you'll need if you follow more than 15 or 20 people on Twitter. Hit up the app store and get updated.
