Apple Announces WWDC 2011, Likely No iPhone 5 This Year

This morning Apple announced the dates for WWDC 2011 with the slogan of "Join us for a preview of iOS and Mac OS X". This year the Worldwide Developers Conference is taking place June 6-10. This conference is iconic because it usually marks the release of a new iPhone, but many sources are saying that might not be the case this year.

TechCrunch first reported that both the iPhone 5 and iOS 5 would be pushed back until the fall. I didn't believe them, but it looks like they may be right. Apple usually holds an event in March or April to announce the next major release of iOS, but this WWDC banner says that the preview of iOS will take place at WWDC in June. Since it's not likely that a new iPhone will ship with an iOS 4.x release, we can assume that an iPhone 5 release will be pushed back until the fall as well.

So what will we see? As I said, that iOS 5.0 preview is definitely coming and it looks to be a major overhaul of the OS. Plus we'll get to see the finishing touches of Mac OS X Lion and a release date.

Last year, WWDC tickets sold out within a few days and this year it will probably sell out even faster, so if you're a developer, get your hands on those tickets pronto!

Update (3:02p ET): Even more suspicious is that Apple is confidently going to unveil the white iPhone 4 sometime this spring and it didn't really make a lot of sense to do so if they were only going to announce the iPhone 5 less than two months later. Now it does because they aren't.
