iOS 4.3 Lands March 11th, Verizon iPhone 4 Out of Luck

In addition to the iPad 2, Apple also unveiled iOS 4.3 today. This software update will arrive on the iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad on March 11th. Plus, it will ship with iPad 2.

So what's in it? Well, there's a nice improvement to AirPlay, for one. You can now stream video to your HDTV in addition to currently being able to stream photos, music, and movies. New safari performance improvements let your iOS device render JavaScript up to 2x faster than on iOS 4.2. Oh, and for you iPad users, you finally get your screen orientation lock back on the side. In fact, you can choose whether or not to keep it a mute switch in the Settings.

But the killer feature of iOS 4.3 has to be iTunes Home Sharing. It's already a feature, but now it comes to iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Any iTunes content you have on your computer -- music, movies, TV shows, audiobooks, and podcasts -- can be automatically played on your iOS device from within your house. Just connect to WiFi and enjoy. This alleviates the need to constantly download and sync, especially if you aren't going to be doing much traveling.

There is some bad news though. iOS 4.3 will drop compatibility for the iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2 (both from 2008). Even worse, for some reason or another, the Verizon iPhone will not be getting this update. It may come later, but it's not coming on March 11th -- that's for sure. The GSM iPhone (AT&T) is the only one compatible.
