BlackBerry PlayBook Review Guide: A Compelling 7-Inch Tablet, But Still Somewhat Behind
The reviews are all in for the BlackBerry PlayBook today. The newest addition to the tablet wars will be made available on April 19th for the same price points as the WiFi iPad models. So what is the general consensus? Well it seems that the BlackBerry PlayBook is quite simply the 7-inch tablet we've been waiting for. It offers a good combination of speedy internals, sleek externals, and a beautifully designed UI. Unfortunately, most seem to agree that it still is not enough to be recommended over the iPad 2 or even a Xoom.
In order from my favorite to least favorite, I'll link to some of the top reviews along with some interesting quotes from each. Sit down, grab some snacks, and get reading. It's going to be a long evening.
This is My Next
"Let me say first and foremost that the PlayBook is a really solid device with a handsome and clean industrial design, a hefty set of specs, and a new operating system that shows tons of promise. But the PlayBook isn’t hitting home runs just yet. [...] The worst part, however, is that I can’t think of a single reason to recommend this tablet over the iPad 2, or for that matter… the Xoom." - Joshua Topolsky

"When you’re holding the PlayBook, you’ll also notice that unlike the aluminum back of the iPad, the backing here is more rubbery. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, just different. Though in my opinion, it does make the device feel slightly cheaper than the iPad — more plastic-y. It almost feels as if the PlayBook has a case around it that’s permanently affixed. This goes right up to the front bezel which is slightly raised above the PlayBook’s screen itself." - MG Siegler

"Ultimately [the OS] is very intuitive to use and, even better, it feels really good. The dynamic action of throwing a frustrating application right off of the screen is quite satisfying, and the lack of any multi-finger antics certainly makes task-switching a far surer affair. Everything is quick and responsive -- just what you expect on a tablet that costs this much money." - Tim Stevens

"The BlackBerry PlayBook ably showcases RIM's powerful new mobile operating system, but its middling size diminishes many of its best features." - Donald Bell

"I can’t help but feel like the PlayBook, as it stands now, is an unfinished product. The hardware is there but the software is buggy at times, and the apps are severely lacking and almost non-existent in terms of quality. While the Web browser is extremely solid, with no native email or calendar or contact apps, the PlayBook isn’t a very good standalone product." - Jonathan Geller
