Motorola Xoom Sells 100,000 Units So Far: Success or Failure?
Deutsche Bank estimates that so far, Motorola has sold around 100,000 Xoom tablets since its launch. The estimate comes from Android 3.0 Honeycomb market share which is currently at 0.2% of all versions of Android. Most are calling the Motorola Xoom a flop because of these numbers. In comparison, some analysts believe nearly a million iPad 2s were sold on the very first day of its release.
Well I think Boy Genius Report has a good view on this:
Since the $800 3G version of the tablet has been available for 42 days compared to only 10 days of availability for the Wi-Fi version, it could be safe to assume that more 3G units have been sold than Wi-Fi units, which drives up sales totals significantly. Even at a conservative 50-50 split, we’re talking about $70 million. That’s a flop?
It's true. That's a nice sum of money for Motorola, and I agree that the Xoom is actually not a flop. For most of 2010, iPad was the only real tablet available to consumers and even now you can count on one hand how many competitors there are. Most haven't even released their first tablet when Apple has almost certainly already sold well over a million iPad 2s. In this regard, Xoom is obviously a failure.
But I think that instead of comparing the Xoom to the iPad, we should look at it from the perspective of the entire tablet market. Tablets are very, very new in the computing space. In fact, I'd say that a lot of people aren't even familiar with the word "tablet". They only know of an iPad. For Motorola to sell 100,000 tablets under two months isn't all that bad. 100,000 people now know what a tablet is. Plus, there's clear interest for tablets other than iPad because it's not very easy to shell out up to $800 on something you aren't absolutely sure you need.
So here's the conclusion. For a product that is released into a brand new market, the Xoom is doing pretty well so far. For a product compared to its competition -- which right now is only the iPad 2 -- it's not doing so hot. Look at it in whatever way you choose to look at it. In my opinion since the tablet market is so new, we should all just close our eyes for a little bit.
