iPhone OS 4.0 Rumors: Multitasking & More

Ever since the big rumor yesterday that at Apple's big event next week on January 27th the Apple Tablet PLUS iPhone OS 4.0 plans would be unveiled (and iLife '10), the iPhone 4.0 rumors are starting to unfold. Boy Genius Reports has an Apple insider that is reporting some possibilities for the new operating system of the iPhone, so let's quote them from BGR, shall we?

Here are some iPhone OS 4.0 features, according to our guy:
  • There will be multi-touch gestures OS-wide. (Would make sense for that as the rumored OS for the iTablet is close if not the same as the iPhone)
  • “A few new ways” to run applications in the background — multitasking.
  • Many graphical and UI changes to make navigating through the OS easier and more efficient. We haven’t had this broken down, but we can only hope for improved notifications, a refreshed homescreen, etc.
  • The update will supposedly be available for only the iPhone 3G and 3GS, but will “put them ahead in the smartphone market because it will make them more like full-fledged computers” more than any other phone to date. Everyone is “really excited.”
  • The last piece of information is the most vague, but apparently there will be some brand new syncing ability for the contacts and calendar applications.

That’s all we have for now! Who can’t wait for next Wednesday?

I'm sure all of us tech enthusiasts (or maybe just me) is as giddy as a school child with a big rainbow lollipop. Also, I've been getting some confusion on what iPhone OS 4.0 is exactly. iPhone OS is not the new iPhone device itself, it's only the updated firmware on the iPhone -- OS standing for operating system.

I'm personally excited about multitasking which is great, and the graphical and UI changes. It's about time the iPhone OS got a nice fresh look to it instead of the standard black background and multicolored icons all over the place. Oh and don't even get me started on the gray pinstriped background on the Settings app and others.
