For the First Time Ever, iPhone is Falling Behind
When the iPhone was introduced in 2007, Steve Jobs claimed it would revolutionize the way we use our cell phones. While this may be a well-known fact, it also gave opportunity for competitors to pick up on where the iPhone lacks and make a better device and operating system. iPhone's main competitor is Google's Android OS. Unlike the iPhone OS that's locked in to just the iPhone, Android can be installed on a variety of devices, and it really bloomed in 2009. With more recent announcements, it seems like Android has finally caught up to the current iPhone, the iPhone 3GS, putting the iPhone a few steps behind a couple of devices -- namely the HTC Droid Incredible.
The HTC Droid Incredible debuted recently on Verizon, and now has the title of "the smartphone to beat". iPhone held this title up until around the very beginning of 2010. On top of that, the world's first 4G speed phone debuted on Sprint entitled the HTC EVO 4G. Both phones have competitive features and both run Google Android OS. For instance, the Droid Incredible has an 8MP camera with flash, tethering support, Adobe Flash lite, and an FM tuner -- all features the iPhone lacks. On top of those unique feature, Droid Incredible basically has all the features the iPhone has. Plus with Android 2.1, widgets, and HTC Sense UI, the Droid Incredible is an excellent phone.
Android has been in the news more and more lately. It recently reached 50,000 apps in the Android Market, Google's competitor to Apple's App Store. While that's only 25% of the app store's 200,000, it's still promising. Plus, Android 2.2 leaks claim it will support USB tethering and full Adobe Flash. We all know how Apple feels about Flash. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel for iPhone...
This June, Apple is expected to unveil it's fourth-generation iPhone that will run iPhone OS 4.0 with a slew of new features. The new handset's features have already been leaked and it's clear Apple wants to wipe out the competition with the new iPhone. Apple's under a lot of pressure this year in fulfilling the wants and needs of smartphone users everywhere. Will they come out strong as #1 once more this year?
