AT&T Announces New Smartphone Data Plans, Adds Tethering
AT&T today announced that there will be some new smartphone data plans that will arrive starting June 7th, curiously on the day of WWDC. What users might have a problem with is the lack of an unlimited plan. While that is true, these plans may save you some money in your pocket.
The first data plan will be $15 a month, called DataPlus, and that's for 200MB of data. AT&T says this will cover 65% of all it's smartphone users. If you go over that limit, it's an extra $10 per 100MB you use. The second data plan is 2GB a month, called DataPro, and is priced at $25 a month. AT&T says this will cover 98% of all it's smartphone users. The new tethering option, which will finally arrive on iPhone OS 4 this summer, is an extra $20 a month but can only be used when a user has the DataPro plan.
A problem arises, though, for iPad users. These same data plans apply for the iPad and for a lot of people, using that bigger screen means also using more data. So some might certainly be displeased with the 2GB cap. AT&T says these new plans are reduced to cut down on prices and surprises, referencing certain customer stories in which they had unlimited data, went above and beyong the expectations of "unlimited", and got ridiculous charges on their bill.
Existing customers can still keep their current plan or switch over if they think it will save them a few bucks. What do you think about the new plans?
