Barnes & Noble Nook Now Starts at Just $149

Barnes & Noble announced today that its e-reader, the Nook, is now starting at just $149, down over $100. This leaves its biggest competitor, the Amazon Kindle, less of a value for its hefty price tag of $259. In addition, Barnes & Noble is now offering a WiFi-only version of the Nook to browse and download books through WiFi and free access to AT&T hotspots. Of course, Barnes & Noble offers WiFi in stores as well. The WiFi version will go fo that $149 price tag and the WiFi + free 3G model goes for $199 -- still a great bargain. What will Amazon do to catch up? Let's wait and see over the next few weeks.

Update (3:37p ET): Just a few short hours after Barnes & Noble announced the price drop above, Amazon announced that it too would drop the Kindle. But Amazon went ahead and made it $10 less than the 3G Nook and is now $189. They clearly saw fierce competition from Barnes & Noble, but they are still above the WiFi only Nook at $149. So it clearly all depends on what kind of connectivity you want in your e-reader as well as whether you want the classic feel of the Kindle or the modernized feel of the Nook.
