Google Image Search Gets Completely Redesigned

Today Google held an event in which they announced some major changes for Google Image Search. (An event for image search? Really?) Right now, Google Image Search is basically filled with mostly images with a few lines of text underneath and these photos are lined across the page. Where there isn't images, there's either your search bar at the top or loads of options and filters in the left sidebar. Even with over 1 billion page views per day and 10 billion images indexed, Google still wants to transform Google Images.

With this new redesign, Google is adding a changed look to Google Images and much more efficient tools. The new results page will not include any text, it will be a ton of scattered out images. There will be infinite scrolling instead of multiple pages, and I can imagine that will eventually be brought to web search. Also, there will be a new way to actually see your images. When you click in image, it will enlarge overlaying the results, and clicking through will bring you to a preview of the website that contains that image in the background. No more annoying framed sites.

As for advertisers, say hello to Google Image Search Ads. You'll be able to use your own image as in ad in the results page of Image Search.

Google Image Search will only be available on the latest web browsers including Chrome, Safari, Firefox 3+, and IE7+. The full roll out will complete by the end of the week.
