BlackBerry Torch Gets Price Cut, Poor Sales Estimates

As expected, RIM's launch for the BlackBerry Torch isn't going well. After less than a week, the BlackBerry Torch has already received a 50% price cut, going from $199 to now just $99 with a two year contract. Plus, analysts are now estimating that the BlackBerry Torch only sold 150,000 devices during opening weekend, which is dust in the wind compared to iPhone 4's 1.7 million.

RIM was supposedly targeting today's smartphones wit the BlackBerry Torch but with 480p video capture, a 624MHz processor, and low resolution display it seems that RIM wasn't trying very hard. BlackBerry OS 6 is definitely an improvement over the previous operating system, but it's hard to say it's good enough. Most reviews have found that it can be confusing and noticeably sluggish at times.

As I previously wrote, is this really the end for BlackBerry? Right now that's a very controversial question. Things aren't looking too well for RIM -- that we know, but can they pull through and deliver a new device before Android and iPhone completely take over?
