T-Mobile to Get iPhone 3GS, Not iPhone 4?

Editor-in-chief of Wired, Chris Anderson, recently tweeted that he got a juicy tip from a T-Mobile manager the other day about the iPhone:

A T-Mobile manager casually mentioned to me that they're going to get the iPhone 3GS (but not 4, oddly) later this year. Common knowledge?

Back in July, there were rumors that the iPhone would be coming to T-Mobile instead of Verizon, as many are currently hoping for. This would make sense since both AT&T and T-Mobile are GSM networks while Verizon and Sprint are CDMA. The iPhone would then have to be CDMA-compatible in order to work on those networks. Much less work would have to be done on the iPhone if it were to land on T-Mobile shelves.

However, this new rumor is a bit different. This suggests that only the iPhone 3GS would come to T-Mobile and not the iPhone 4. If this were true, it would probably make more sense to launch the iPhone 5 and at the launch, put the iPhone 4 on both carriers. It still seems odd that Apple would choose to put their older model on another carrier. Last year at WWDC09, Phil Schiller announced for the first time on stage that the iPhone 3G would be available along with the 3GS but for $100 less in order to make it more affordable to customers. If the 3GS did expand to T-Mobile, it could be in an effort to simply reach more people with that more affordable price.

Since it's just a tweet, we must remind ourselves that we can't look too far into this, but like anything Apple congers up, there's always going to be speculation. We'll find out soon enough.
