What to Expect at Apple's "Back to the Mac" Event
In keeping with tradition here on Bitts, it's time for another "What to Expect" article for one of Apple's famous keynotes. This time, we're going to focus on Apple's "Back to the Mac" event coming this Wednesday. Each rumor heard so far will be rated from 1-5 stars, with five stars being an almost guaranteed announcement. Let's get to it!
Mac OS X 10.7 Lion - ★★★★★
As you can see in the invitation graphic above, there's a lion peaking behind the Apple logo. Why is a lion at all related to Apple? Because it's most likely going to be the name Apple's latest operating system. "Lion" would fit in perfectly with the trend of cat names Apple gives to its well-praised OS.
New 11.7" MacBook Air - ★★★★
A new, smaller MacBook Air is expected to show its face at Apple's event this Wednesday. The MacBook Air is already tremendously overdue for an update, and a new 11.7" model may be added to the current 13.3" offering for a more compact and affordable portable solution.
iLife and iWork Updates - ★★★★
Not talked about much since Macworld 2009, the current iLife '09 and iWork '09 are overdue for an update as well. Hopefully we'll see some nice new features added and maybe even a version of iBooks for the Mac? It's certainly possible.
Touchscreen iMac - ★★★
A while back, rumors surfaced that Apple was working on a touchscreen version of the iMac that could even switch between Mac OS X and iOS when needed. We could see this on Wednesday, but since the patent was recently filed, it may take a bit longer until we see an actual finished product.
White iPhone 4 - ★★★
Steve Jobs has a tendency to announce some brief updates before getting to the larger scale announcements, and the white iPhone 4 may be one of them. This would be the perfect time to finally make the product available since this is most likely Apple's last keynote of 2010. Since this event is Mac-centric, the white iPhone 4 may just be informally announced later this year.
Updates to Ping - ★★
iTunes 10 brought Apple's music social network called Ping, but since its release, it's been pretty bare bones. Hopefully we can see some shiny new features coming to Ping to really spark interest. There hasn't been any rumors about this though, so it could all just be wishful thinking.
Discontinuation of Mac OS X - ★
Look at the invitation for this event. Need I say more?
