Twitter and TweetDeck are talking in rather hushed tones about the possibility of a acquisition by Twitter for $50 million. TweetDeck is a popular desktop/mobile/web application specifically targeted toward heavy users of Twitter and includes a number of features -- such as multiple timelines running at once -- that Twitter has yet to offer on the main site or in any of its desktop or mobile apps.

An acquisition probably would not mean a new app. The only exception to that is if Twitter finally decides to release a Windows app. Still, it'd be more likely if we see some of TweetDeck's famous features be implemented onto the Twitter website.
